It’s getting colder.. Fall is here.. the days are getting shorter.. it’s getting darker outside earlier. If you didn’t know any of this you can thank me in the comment section below! (:
I know here in good old Lancaster County, Pennsylvania sunset is now at 6:30PM and well that is usually a time when most people are getting off of work and might be even heading outside to do their workouts. :::Blog Idea light bulb goes on::: {Not me obviously… for now…but next month it will be.} So today lets talk about some safety features if you plan on going outside for a run.. and well how to keep yourself warm.
On Sunday I went for a run… this is how cool I looked:
Sunday was a warmer day than usual and well I actually ran in the early afternoon so that doesn’t really work with the whole getting darker thing. But in my Shape Magazine this month they did come up with some good things to have on you if you are running outside:![]()
1. Brooks Nightlife Essential Run Vest. This vest blocks wind and has 360 degree reflectivity to make you visible to cars from every direction. {safety and keeps you warm.}
2. Under Armour Fly-By Turtleneck. It can be pulled over your face when it is really really cool out. It’s mesh panel allows moisture from your breath to escape. {keeps you warm}
3. Smarty Pants: Have ventilation panels behind your knees plus two rear pockets to stash your ID and Keys. {ID=safety. Pants= Keeps you warm}
4. Reebok ZigLite Electrify Shoes. Bright bottoms of your shoes. {Safety.}
All of the other awesome things in the picture are also good things to have… but not necessary to stay warm or safe!
Another safety feature they had in their magazine this month:![]()
See that tag… Lets get a closer look!![]()
Emergency Link.
Here is what it says in the magazine about this little guy that all you do is connect it to your shoe lace:
You may not picture this when you’re out hiking or blasting through an intense cycling class, but what would happen if you slipped on a rock or passed out? Would the people who come to our aid know which of your contacts to call, or that penicillin makes you break out in a rash? Now there’s a simple solution: the free EmergencyLink app which stores your go-to numbers, medicine you’re taking, and any allergies or chronic conditions you may have on your smart phone. Sign up via the company’s website (emergencylink.com) and you’ll also receive a sneaker/keychain tags, making sure your data will be easily accessible when your phone is not. (There’s an added bonus for iPhone users—you can opt for a screensaver that shows your main details and the 24-hour emergency hotline even if your device is locked.
Well I’m actually going to sign up for it RIGHT NOW!
First I went here. I signed up… waited for my confirmation e-mail. They then sent me this one!
Everything that I want to do!
Next you fill out a couple of forms about yourself:
You know that important information that makes the card work! (:
In the emergency medical info I wrote that I don’t take any medications. I don’t have any allergies… and who my insurance company is. In the Emergency Contacts part I put Eric and my mom.
It seriously took me like 5 minutes to fill out and now I will receive my cards in the mail in 7-10 business days! It was that simple!
Next I downloaded the app on my phone! ![]()
I think the screensaver is an awesome idea. Especially because I run with my phone since it is my only music device. I also have a lock on my phone which makes it impossible for anyone to get in unless they know my 4 number password. ![]()
This was also easy to set up. If you go into the app you click on screen saver it asks you what kind you want and then you can even add your own picture to it! Then just go to the settings portion on your phone and change your wallpaper!
I know this is definitely beneficial to me because I don’t belong to a gym and if I run I’m going to be running outside and who knows what could happen.
I know there are a bunch of different ways people stay safe when outside:
RoadID
My Road ID
Whatever you have it doesn’t really matter! What matters is that you are safe when you are outside and running or doing anything outside by yourself. You never know what could happen!
I’m one of these people… are you?
Questions: What do you use to stay safe when you are outside? What do you wear to stay safe outside when running? Do you run in the fall/winter?

Great post. I hope everybody takes advantage of it.
Great post! I have a similar one on que
Being safe while running (especially at night or early morning hours) is super important. Thanks for sharing!
Great Tips! I have been thinking about runner safetly alot because of the lack of daylight and colder weather. I always try to wear bright colors with reflective pops so people and cars can see me.
great ideas! Yesterday I went for a run and it got dark so fast. Luckily I ran with someone, had my bright shoes on and carried flashlights! They are always fun to shine at cars! (: hehe
Great safety tips! I am not a big solo runner, when I am training for distance races I usually join a class at my local running store so I don’t have to run alone in the dark. However I do plan on getting a Road ID soon just in case something happens while I am out on a run!
great idea to join a class! a road id is very important even in group runs. you never know! (:
Awesome app, thanks for sharing!
This is a great post! My husband and I have headlamps and now we have vests because of Reach the Beach. I actually stay safe by primarily only running at night/early morning with my husband. I prefer not to run by myself!
great ideas! I wish I could always find someone to run with.. its safer and more fun and it makes the time go by so much faster! (:
Ha good ole lancaster!!
I could so go for Shady Maple Smorgasbord right about now.
mmm me too! I haven’t been there in a couple of years!
me either. let’s go when i come visit in March??!!!
I have a RoadID and I wear it on every run. I also make sure to always tell my husband where I’ll be running and how long I expect to run that way he’ll know when to expect me home.
great idea. i wish i could tell Eric when I run.. I mean I could but it wouldn’t make any sense since we don’t work the same schedule and he can’t check his phone at work but on the weekends if i’m going somewhere I will tell him or my mom.
Stopping by from Saturday Sharefest at SITS. This is a really helpful article…I wish I was a runner. In my mind, I am. I think that Emergency Link thing is really cool, and I actually feel like it could work for many situations. Thank you for including it!
Oh it definitely could be used in several ways! Definitely something to keep close to you… you never know what could happen!
Great post! Stopping by from SITS Sharefest! I Love the tips. I started running 4 years ago, but last winter was the first I ran outside. I was sort of a wimp and didn’t have the equipment.
I have a Road ID – the slim bracelet. I love it, and I actually wear it when I’m traveling alone as well.
I highly recommend wearing a headlamp and a flashing light too. I attach the flashing red light to the back of my jacket or my sleeves, or somewhere visible to traffic.
you definitely use some awesome tools to stay safe! great job Jolene! (:
