I just signed up for my first ever 10K… okay well maybe that is somewhat of a lie because I did do the MuckRuckus 10K last year but that was a mud run that didn’t really have a lot of running to it. Eric actually had me walk a lot of the end but that was a fun run. This one is down and dirty we are running it!

The run is taking place in the sweetest place on earth: Hershey! Hershey park to be exact which is pretty awesome. I’ve been there a million times but never thought about running it. Now that I think about it there are A LOT of hills… so this run might actually suck!

The run is in April which should be BEAUTIFUL weather. Maybe even some rain. It starts at 7:30 in the morning which is definitely going to be an EARLY wakeup call but that is okay! Did I tell you I only ran 6 miles once in my life and that is because my friends tricked me! Oh boy! So now I have some questions for you.
When should I start training? {It is cold here you know so running outside isn’t my favorite plan and I don’t have a gym membership.}
Do you have a training plan for me?
How should I mentally prepare for the run?
The best part about doing this run is because it is going to gear me up for the Hershey Half in October. You do this same part of the run in that one too so it will give me something to look forward to! Yay for new races!
Question: Do you have any races planned for this year so far?

Oooh, I’m definitely going to look into this race! I am already thinking ahead to what I’m going to do after Disney Princess, and this might be a good option. You’re right though — Hershey is SUPER hilly! That hill that leads up to the Sidewinder… ouch.
you definitely should look into it! (: That would be so much fun!
Yay! Sounds so fun!! I ran a 10K a few months ago and it was so great. I’m not a distance runner at all- the longest run I had done was 7 miles (and I think I walked a bit). I don’t know if you need a huge training plan- I could probably only run 4 miles without stopping when I did my 10K. I picked a girl in front of me with a speed just a tiny bit faster than my normal pace and I promised myself I would keep up with her. She pushed me the entire time and I finished WAY faster than I thought I could! You can do it! It’s a perfect distance to push yourself without dying (I would die running any farther lol).
That is a great way to stick to a pace! I must keep that in mind! I’m planning on doing this 10K and then the Half here as well! That is definitely the race I will stop at though. 13.1 seems tough! haha
How exciting!!
I’d suggest running whatever you can 2-3 times a week now. Don’t worry about distance or speed. Just go and get into the habit of running.
I love Hal Higdon for anything I try first time – http://www.halhigdon.com/training/51122/10K-Novice-Training-Program
You start with the actual training just 2 months before the race.
Mentally – believe in your training and you can do it!!
(Email me if you need to talk more. I’d love to help)
Several people told me to follow this plan! I’m definitely going to look into it! Thanks!
How exciting! I’m sure you are going to do amazing! The farthest I’ve ever done is a 5k but I do hope to run a 10k at some point!
a 5k is the furthers I have ever ran too! other than the mud run that wasn’t really running!
I am signed up for 8 races in the beginning of 2013! I ran a 10K last week and I have a 5 K this weekend. The rest of the spring includes a 15K, 10K, half marathong, two mud races and a fun running mom 5K. Wow, I am tired just tying all of that! Enjoy your 10K, I think that is my favorite distance. Easy to train for without giving up several months of your life…
wow that is awesome! I seem to just sign up for races the week of and not really in advance! haha
Ohhh do they have good goodies for raceday?
Sounds like it could be yummy!
They better! haha!
Good luck, Danielle! You’re going to do great! Since the beginning of the year, I’ve been running about 3 miles each day. It feels great
Thanks Min! That is awesome! I’m glad you are back to running! (:
Wohoo! A 10K is a great distance to race!
I wasn’t sure whether or not you did decide to do the hershey 1/2 in October. That’s great that you will be doing both races.
My first (and so far only) 10K was super tough for me. I had already run a half marathon so it wasn’t that it was too far for what I was used to, but there’s just something about 6 miles that’s tough. I think I tried to run it too fast (plus it was a really hot day) so I got very dehydrated toward the end. It was actually really scary. I don’t have a training plan for you, but I look forward to seeing what you come up with. I have another 10K this year (same route, actually) so I’m hoping to do much better (and train more appropriately, both physically and mentally).
I hope this 10K this year goes better for you! (: I think that is a good distance for me! Guess we shall find out!
Hi!! I wish I had seen this post/blog sooner! I’m from Central PA (Jonestown) and running this 10K as well! This will be my second time running it. Last year it was definitely a tad hilly, but no worse then their half marathon. The worst part– running Hershey Park Drive– BORING. lol
If you ever want to run together, I’m always looking for company! I do my long runs on Sundays.
Mentally preparing– I have a mantra– “Finishing is Winning”
My race plans this year include a 10 miler in DC on April 7th, then this 10k on the 14th, a 5K on the 20th, and then a few other 5k’s sprinkled in before doing the Hershey Half.
Congrats on your races!
P.S. – I’m a SPA as well!
oh yay! what town do you live in? You should join the pa blogger facebook group! We meet up about every month! http://www.facebook.com/PaBloggers?fref=ts
I’m going to try and do the Hershey half this year. It will be my first half marathon! (: Unless I do the Harrisburg half too!
I live in Palmyra right now, but will be moving to Jonestown (Near Annville or Indiantown Gap?) in the summer/fall.
I will definitely join the group. That would be fun!!
I’ve really enjoyed the Hershey Half and have played around with doing the Harrisburg instead, but who DOESN’T love chocolate at mile 9 while running through the park?!
chocolate sounds yummy! I didn’t even know about that. I want to do the harrisburg half first because its all flat but the hershey 10k will be the perfect test run for the half.
