While I was in Cambridge for the Healthy Living Summit I decided to attend a session about natural beauty products from a Whole Foods employee.

At the store they have a beauty section and one of the goals is to have products that don’t have any of the “dirty 30” in them. What might the “dirty 30” be?
**Warning what these products do might disturb you**

I made this graph after finding the list online. Each one of the chemicals have many functions, things they are present in, and health concerns. I just picked one of them. I know during the session I was pretty grossed out and ready to look at all of my beauty products when I got home. Since then though I kind of feel like what I don’t know won’t hurt me. Haha. That is probably a bad thing considering a majority of these are banned in a lot of different countries.. Kinda gross. I urge you to go through your products though and find out if they have any of the above.

Whole Foods also gave us a lot of samples! I haven’t tried any of them yet but I definitely plan to and then maybe that will get my butt moving to switch over and use some of the healthy products. Instead of making it be like a “diet” that I only do for a couple of days maybe I can get some of the beauty supplies into a lifestyle change. Probably not everything but a couple of changes could save my life… Right?! Right!
Questions: Are you going to look through your beauty supplies?
Will you switch any of your old beauty supplies with new ones?

Omg!! That’s so crazy! I had no idea!! Thanks so much for sharing this!!!! I’ll be digging through my stuff tonight! Spalove!
Ahh thank you for the list of the Dirty 30 !! Just pinned it to refer to. I’ve wanted to purge my toilettries and makeup of harmful chemicals, but haven’t taken the plunge, yet. My plan is to use up what I’ve got, and try finding natural alternatives as I buy new. This list will be a huge help!!
Oh wow, things I didn’t know. Thank you so much for sharing this girl!
Great info! Thanks!
It’s just plain ugly what’s in our products. What disturbs me more is that this stuff is hidden in things aimed at kids. I do my best to go with all natural vegan products but I know for sure that not everything is safe.
I think lists like that cause a lot more fear than anything. While I definitely try to be as natural as possible, I think some of those listed are misleading. For instance I saw that talc was a carcinogen and is found in blush. I started freaking out and googled what my blush (Nars Orgasm for reference) is made of. I saw the first ingredient is talc and was like holy crap. Then I actually went and researched talc and found there are two different types, talc with asbestos and talc without. Talc with asbestos is obviously a known carcinogen, but it is not used in any modern consumer products. And there has been no study that has found a correlation between talc without asbestos and a higher risk of cancer.

I just wanted to share this because I don’t want you to worry. While there is definitely bad stuff out there and we absolutely have to do our research, I think people jump on the fear bandwagon a little too easily.
Yikes, that is crazy! This makes me think about the dirty dozen and the clean fifteen of produce. It is definitely important to know what you are putting into and onto your body. Sounds like this was an excellent informational session!
